Description

  • Review work orders and discuss work to be performed with supervisor
  • Inspect and test engine using test devices to diagnose and isolate faults
  • Determine estimates of repair cost
  • Diagnose and repair fuel injection, carburetor system, drive line, steering system, front and rear suspension, mechanical braking system, hydraulic braking system, ignition system, charging system, frames, tires and wheels
  • Test and adjust repaired systems for proper performance
  • Perform scheduled maintenance service on equipment
  • Advise customers on work performed and general condition of motorcycle

Personal Qualities

  • You like working with computerized equipment
  • You like working with your hands and do not mind getting them dirty
  • You will work indoors and sometimes outside with noises, grease and oil
  • You enjoy working to close and exacting tolerances
  • You have the stamina to be on your feet for long periods of time and must bend down and crouch frequently
  • You are not bothered by standing on concrete all day
  • You like to learn new things on a consistent basis
  • You will make a significant investment in tools

Career Opportunities

  • Motorcycle mechanics are employed at motorcycle dealerships and other repair facilities
  • Some motorcycle mechanics have their own business

Educational/Training Requirements

  • The minimum entry for apprenticeship is Grade 12
  • Completion of a 5,550 hour apprenticeship program is required
  • If you have completed 6,000 hours of on the job experience/training but have not completed the apprenticeship program you may be eligible to challenge the Certificate of Qualification

Potential Earnings

  • Apprentices start according to individual company rates and progress along the company’s wage scale over time
  • Wages1 range from $13.08 to $29.13 an hour, excluding overtime, with journeypersons usually earning the higher end of the pay scale  

Prospects For Employment

  • Employment is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through the year 20092
  • Work in this trade is often of a seasonal nature; to have year round work, many motorcycle mechanics work for a company that is also involved in the winter recreational vehicle business

Financial Incentives

  • Employers who register first, second and third year apprentices can apply for the Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit
  • Employers who employ first and second year apprentices can apply for the Apprenticeship Job Creation Tax Credit
  • Apprentices are able to apply for the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant
  • Apprentices may also be able to apply for the Tradesperson's Tools Tax Deduction
