Description
- Formulate a feeding program
- Maintain livestock/swine performance records
- Carry out a pasture or pen breeding program
- Perform breeding/gestation, farrowing and finishing procedures
- Recognize and treat certain livestock/swine health problems
- Prepare and perform milking procedures
- Perform manure management procedures
- Operate and maintain barn mechanical and electrical systems
- Operate and maintain farm mechanical systems
- Perform general farm duties
- Knowledge and application of requisite health and safety acts and regulations
Personal Qualities
- You work both inside and outside and are exposed to animals and farm odours
- You like working with animals
- You are in good physical condition and like working hard
- You have the stamina to be on your feet for long periods of time
- You are safety conscious
Career Opportunities
- Herdspersons work for any establishment that is producing milk for dairy products or that raises pigs for pork products
- Some herdspersons work for family farms while others work for corporate farming entities
Educational/Training Requirements
- The minimum entry for apprenticeship is Grade 12
- Completion of a 5,520 hourapprenticeship program is required
