My name is Brandy Jones and I am an Early Childhood Educator Apprentice.
Why did I choose the apprenticeship program to become an Early Childhood Educator?
I chose the apprenticeship program because I felt it was important to get hands on experience in the ECE field while learning new approaches and techniques that I could implement on a day to day basis. It also has more affordable tuition costs as well as the convenience of achieving my goal to receive my ECE diploma while still earning a daily income.
When did you enroll in the apprenticeship program?
I enrolled in the apprenticeship program in January 2007 and I completed 15 courses between January and December. I fast tracked by taking 7 courses in 7 weeks which I highly recommend. On an average I completed 2 – 3 courses a semester through night classes.
When do you expect to finish your apprenticeship?
I hope to complete all 23 courses by December 2008 and then I will work on completing my 3 general education courses to turn my certificate into a diploma.
Where are you currently working and in what position?
I am currently working at Curiosity Children’s Centre Inc. in Port Perry. I have worked there for 2 1/2 years with great support. I am currently an Early Childhood Assistant working with children ranging from ages 2 – 12.
What are your duties in your position?
I implement daily educational activities and routines with the children. I work as part of the team that provides a safe, secure and fun loving environment. I also manage and maintain an organized environment while promoting independence and personal hygiene with the children.
What part of your job and school do you enjoy the most and the least?
What I enjoy the most is being able to combine what I learn from school and implement it on a daily basis. I am able to take the new approaches I am learning in school and apply them to the workplace. This is great to see the results and see what does and doesn’t work as well as feedback from both your co-workers and teachers. What I like least is going to class after a long day, the initial thought of it is tiring, however, once I arrive its like you switch into school mode and the discussions with peers and valuable things that you learn make it worth it!
What are your future plans after receiving completing your apprenticeship and receiving your diploma?
I hope to continue on with my education and work towards my B.A. in Early Childhood Education. After doing so I would like to attend teachers college and use my hands on experience and education to teach children in a primary division.Back to top
