Description

Small engine technicians repair and service small gasoline and diesel powered equipment such as garden tractors, lawn mowers and other related equipment
Review work orders and discuss work to be performed with supervisor
Determine estimates of repair cost
Set up and operate small-power equipment
Inspect and test small engines and other mechanical components using test devices to diagnose and isolate faults
Adjust, repair or replace mechanical or electrical system parts and components using hand tools and equipment
Perform scheduled maintenance service on equipment
Maintain and repair engines and engine components
Test and adjust repaired equipment for proper performance
Advise customers on work performed and general condition of equipment

You enjoy working to close and exacting tolerances
You have the stamina to be on your feet for long periods of time and must bend down and crouch frequently
You like to study and keep up with changing technology
You will make a significant investment in tools
You like working with computerized equipment
You like working with small engines

Small engine technicians are employed by dealer service shops and by independent service establishments
Some small engine technicians own their own business

The minimum entry for apprenticeship is Grade 12
Completion of a 4,520 hour apprenticeship program is required
If you have completed 5,000 hours of on the job experience/training but have not completed the apprenticeship program you may be eligible to challenge the Certificate of Qualification
